Rosalie Hayward founded Region 9 in 1961 by chartering the Portland, Oregon chapter, after hearing about NAWIC when returning home on an airplane. The subsequent Region 9 chapters that were chartered and are still active are: The Puget Sound (originally Seattle & Bellevue), Washington Chapter, in 1962; Eugene, Oregon in 1963; Spokane, Washington in 1967; Tacoma, and Tri-Cities, Washington in 1972; the Alaska Chapter (formerly Anchorage), and Salem, Oregon in 1973; Great Falls, Montana in 1976, and Boise, Idaho in 1978.
